REGENXBIO's Gene Therapy Shows Five-Year Durability in Retinal Disease

REGENXBIO is making the case that a single gene therapy can free retinal patients from years of eye injections. The company (NASDAQ: RGNX) is developing surabgene lomparvovec, also known as sura-vec or ABBV-RGX-314, in partnership with AbbVie for wet age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

At the American Society of Retina Specialists annual meeting, presented on July 18, 2026, REGENXBIO reported positive long-term data showing that patients in Phase I/IIa Cohorts 3 and 4 who received subretinal sura-vec maintained stable to improved visual acuity with meaningful reductions in anti-VEGF injection burden through five years. At one year, vision was preserved relative to a real-world anti-VEGF control-matched group, with less central retinal thickness fluctuation and significantly fewer injections. The company is advancing sura-vec in the pivotal ATMOSPHERE and ASCENT trials, and the durability signal reinforces its potential to shift the treatment paradigm for chronic retinal disease.
