ProQR Therapeutics Posts a First Clinical Win for Its Axiomer RNA-Editing Platform

ProQR Therapeutics reported Phase 1 target-engagement data that it says provides the first clinical validation of its Axiomer RNA-editing platform, and priced a $50 million financing the same day.

ProQR Therapeutics delivered the first clinical proof point for its RNA-editing technology, and paired it with fresh cash.

The Nasdaq-listed company is developing Axiomer, an RNA-editing platform that harnesses the body's own enzymes to make single-base edits to RNA, potentially treating diseases without altering DNA. Its lead candidate, AX-0810, targets NTCP, a bile-acid transporter implicated in cholestatic liver diseases.

On June 25 ProQR reported positive Phase 1 target-engagement data that it called the first clinical validation of the Axiomer platform. In evaluable cohorts, AX-0810 produced dose-dependent engagement, including an up to eight-fold change in total serum bile acids at the 6 mg/kg dose, well above the two-fold threshold the company set as meaningful. The candidate showed a favorable safety profile with no serious adverse events and an approximately eight-week half-life supporting infrequent dosing. ProQR has selected biliary atresia, a rare pediatric liver disease, as its initial Phase 2 indication, and separately priced a $50.0 million registered direct offering and concurrent private placement.

The data come from healthy volunteers, and efficacy in actual liver-disease patients is still entirely unproven.
