The anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety qualities of CBD oil make it a possible solution to treat anxiety issues. Evidential proofs from animal research and short-term human studies further support this statement.
In an article published on the National Public Radio website, Dr. Esther Blessing said that the compound can treat anxiety disorders. However, clinical trials are required to prove its efficacy and benefits. Dr. Esther Blessing is a psychiatrist and researcher at New York University.
The preliminary studies done in the area showed positive results. In 2011, a blinded research study was conducted on a few dozen patients suffering from social anxiety disorder. The patients were divided into two groups. One of the group was given CBD, while the other was administered with placebos. Then, these patients were asked to address a large audience. Researchers compared the anxiety levels of both the groups. The study showed negligible anxiety in patients who took CBD oil compared to those who didn’t.
The findings piqued the interest of Dr. Blessings. She decided to conduct clinical trials to prove the efficacy of CBD against anxiety. She, along with a group of collaborators, is going to start the first phase of clinical trials on 50 participants. These participants are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). The organizers will randomly administer CBD oil to some patients and placebos to others. The main objective of the study is to see an improvement in the PTSD symptoms.
The CBD oil used for the study will be of pharmaceutical grade with good strength and purity.
The next step will be a Phase 2 clinical trial to check the safety, efficacy, and side effects of CBD oil. This study will be headed by Dr. Yasmin Hurd, a neuroscientist and director at the Addiction Institute at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. At this phase, the investigators will check whether the compound prevents the relapse of anxiety in participants.
The final results of the study will take a few years to come into shape. However, the organizers expect the results to support CBD oil to treat anxiety disorders.
CBD, also referred as cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant. The compound has therapeutic qualities and can effectively treat various medical conditions. It does not alter perception and cognitive abilities. It works well with the endocannabinoid system of the body to provide medicinal benefits.
Besides this, an FDA advisory committee recommended approval for Epidiolex in the United States. Epidiolex is the first pharmaceutical grade CBD product that can treat epilepsy and seizures. The approval can boost more research on its use for other disorders.
